Jen Rhines' runner-up finish (8:35.03) and Shalane Flanagan's fourth-place finish (8:35.34) in today's 3,000 meter race at the Herculis meeting in Monaco move them to #3 and #4, respectively, on the U.S. all-time performers list.
Mary Slaney has the top seven U.S. marks of all time, including her American record of 8:25.83 set in 1985. Libbie Hickman occupies the #2 spot on the performers list with an 8:35.02 from 2000. Rhines and Flanagan come immediately after Hickman both on the performers and performances list, and their times are the ninth and 10th fastest U.S. performances of all time.
Deena Kastor (seventh, 8:44.45) and Michelle Sikes (eighth, 8:44.73) also ran well. Kastor wasn't far off her PR of 8:42.59, which she set in 2000, and the time was a PR for Sikes.
Although Flanagan's time was an outdoor PR, her indoor PR of 8:33.25, which is the indoor American record, is slightly faster.

We're not sure how it took two days for this to start making headlines in the U.S. (we missed it as well), but Bernard Lagat shattered the American record in the indoor 3,000m on Saturday, February 17 in Birmingham, England with a 7:32.43. Tim Broe previously held the record of 7:39.23, which he ran in 2002.

On Wednesday, July 26th, in Helsinki, Finland, Kara Goucher finished third in the 10,000m at the GE Money Grand Prix with a 31:17.12. Her performance vaulted her to #3 on the U.S. all-time performance list, and made her the U.S.'s second-fastest 10,000m runner of all time (the top two times have both been run by Deena Kastor). Jen Rhines finished fourth in the race in 31:24.16, breaking her previous personal best of 31:26.66, which she ran at the 2005 World Championships. Despite the PR, Goucher's performance actually pushed Rhines back one spot on the all-time performers list, to seventh. Katie McGregor, who is now #5 on the all-time U.S. performers list with her 31:21.20 from the 2005 World Championships, also had a strong run in finishing fifth (31:32.17). Other U.S. finishers included Sara Slattery (eighth in a PR 31:57.94), Victoria Jackson (ninth, 32:59.32), and Samia Akbar (10th, 33:30.84). Missy Buttry and Renee Metivier were listed as DNFs and Blake Russell was listed as a DNS.
Not to be outdone, Alice Schmidt finished second in the 800m, behind Mozambique's Maria Mutola, in 1:59.47. Mutola, who has run 1:56.77 this season, won the race in 1:58.72. Nikeya Green of the U.S. finished ninth in the same race in 2:02.36.
On the men's side, the U.S.'s Tom Brooks finished 10th in the steeplechase in 8:40.87. The race was won by Poland's Radoslaw Poplawski in 8:19.25. Steve Slattery of the U.S. was listed as a DNF.
